Why I'm Running for Office

Scott Minnick - Board of Education

Children First
My name is Scott Minnick and I am running for election to the Board of Education.  I graduated from the EH school system in 1986 and hold a Master’s in French and ESL. I am an 8th grade French teacher and have taught in the Glastonbury public school system for the last 12 years.  I am married and have a 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.

For the past four years I have been honored to serve as your Town Councilman from the Chatham Party – an local independent party created by residents in 2005.  The Chatham Party is a challenge to the long established political favoritism that has thwarted EH from growing as it should.  During these past years, we have made progress in bringing needed positive change to East Hampton.  Today, the Chatham Party has grown as more residents recognize the need for a third choice, and so I am excited to be able to support a truly excellent slate of diverse professionals for Town Council, BOE, BOF and ZBA this November.

I have attended East Hampton BOE meetings both in an official and non-official capacity since 2005. In my new role as member of the BOE, I will advocate for a district that is up-to-date in terms of curriculum, technology, and facilities.  I will bring more critical discussions to the BOE table.  I will explore more thoughtful solutions to dealing with budget cuts than simply reaching for easy answers like instituting “pay to play.”   I will insist on more BOE transparency and communication with our residents.  I will work with the Board, our administrators and superintendent, all of whom I hold in the highest regard, toward achieving our common goals of high standards, quality education, and Belltown Pride.

My 12 years as a secondary public school teacher, my knowledge of current state and local issues, and my intrinsic motivation to make our school system even better for our children make me a valuable asset to our Board of Education. Please vote for me and the rest of Row C on November 3rd.  We are East Hampton’s independent party whose local loyalties rest not with national political parties, not with the special interests, largest land owners, or biggest names in town, but with you - average East Hampton citizens with no hidden agendas, lots of common sense, and a desire to see East Hampton start moving forward in positive ways.

Scott Minnick
Board of Education Candidate
