Why I'm Running for Office

Mary Ann Dostaler - Board of Finance

Taxpayers First
When you break it down, the average East Hampton homeowner pays $364 PER MONTH in property taxes. That’s a lot of money, especially in these economic times. Yet if you ask people if they think they’re getting their money’s worth, the answer would be a collective NO. Our roads aren’t as good as they should be. Our schools do a great job but they don’t have what they need to give our children a 21st century education.  Our library and senior center are busting at the seams.  No one even wants to talk about the transfer station.

I am running as a candidate for the Board of Finance because I believe we can and should deliver better value for taxpayers. We can do this by setting realistic priorities and developing reasonable and responsible budgets. Every decision needs to make the best use of limited resources and respect taxpayers’ ability to afford the cost. Too often, I have attended BOF and Town Council meetings where actions are taken not for the benefit of the community, but for a privileged few. Too often, questions are not asked and options are not explored. Too often, opposing views are silenced and constructive feedback is ignored. The result is ineffective budgets, reckless spending and little real accomplishment for our community.

Taxpayers should expect more for their money. As a member of the BOF, my job will be to ensure all taxpayers – not just the privileged few – get the services they need and the respect they deserve.

I have been an active volunteer in the community since I moved to town with my husband in 1998. I am a current member of the Brownfields Redevelopment Agency. I served for four years on the Economic Development Commission, including two years as chairman. Additionally, I was a member and past president of the East Hampton Junior Women’s Club. I also served as a facilitator for the Chatham Roundtables. Professionally, I am the owner of MAD Communications, a marketing and creative services firm. My job is to help businesses develop strategic plans, craft responsible budgets and execute effective programs. These are the skills that I will bring to the Board of Finance.

On Election Day, vote to put TAXPAYERS FIRST. Vote Row “C” to elect me and all of the candidates of the Chatham Party.
