Letter to the Rivereast Editor

Dean Maurice - Board of Finance

Subject – Fact Check.
Statements of facts and asking questions based on those facts are part of the political process. This is what opposing candidates/parties should do to show party differences.  The concept of a multiple party system is to give the voters options so they can see the differences between parties and candidates. This process is not about attack advertisements or letters, but assuring information, such as how your tax dollars are spent, is known to the voters, allowing for questions to be answered by the opposing parties.

Asking questions about facts should be a way to solicit answers and help voters understand differences that affect them. Last weeks letters in the Rivereast from both Democrats and Republicans have not done this. Instead of showing differences between them as majority parties as in other towns, they have shown that they are the same “one party” group. They both decided to support “negative angry” letters slanting the truth, instead of supporting their positions based on solid facts. What is interesting is that they did not do this to show the difference between the two main majority parties. The result is they showed how much they are the same by negatively attacking the Chatham Party in a unified “one party” front.

In order to get balance in a true multi-party system we need a voice that is not controlled by one special interest team. The Chatham Party is made up of Republicans, Democrats and Independents, and volunteers in churches, schools and sports activities across the town. We have been here for multiple generations and will continue to be here for generations. We are not “outsiders” to the town and our only special interest is East Hampton.
